As the testing process has become more complex, particularly with the introduction of web and n-tier client/server systems, so the market of automated testing tools to cope with the demand has increased. The process of elimination to determine the tool which is best for any particular environment has therefore become more complicated, and it is important to determine at the outset the purpose of using such a tool.

Many companies have testing tools as shelf-ware. This could have resulted from frustration in their implementation, the chosen tool being proved to be inappropriate for the technical environment, or the application in question being unsuitable.

The purchase of a tool is often seen as the solution to testing problems. However an automated testing tool, as with any other tool, is merely a means to getting a job completed. Experience is required here, not only in how to utilise the tool itself but also in the organisation of the test planning to make its use efficient and cost effective. There are significant cost savings that can be achieved through the use of automated testing tools.
